Just the confirmation I needed!

Hi Readers

Many of you do not know that I have been doubting my suitability as an Attorney ("Solicitor") over the past year (for many reasons). I have been asking the Universe for an indication of which route I should follow and where I need to start my journey to reach my Life's Purpose.

This past week was one of those beautiful moments in one's life when one simply cannot ignore the wryness of one's situation. I had run my first High Court trial on Thursday (a particularly acrimonious and messy divorce). There were several hurdles to overcome. For instance, the Registrar of the Court simply decided to change our court date two weeks before the original trial date without notifying any of the parties. Had I not attended at Court in order to index, paginate, and collate our Court file, I would not have ascertained this change in the Court date. My opponent was relying on me to ensure our readiness for trial (albeit incorrectly so).

There were several consequences which arose from the change in our Court date, one of which being that the original Advocate ("Barrister") that I had briefed in this matter was now unavailable for the new court date. The Universe helped me a little bit here because I had haply asked another one of our Advocates to make himself available for the previous Court date about four months back. He happened to contact me asking me whether we were settling or proceeding with the trial. I asked him to pencil in the new Court date because at this stage I was not sure if the previous Advocate was available or not. As it turns out, I briefed the second Advocate to conduct the trial with me.

On Thursday, our trial was due to commence. My opponent was attempting to pull all the stops and even started using dirty tricks to try and get what he wanted. What resulted was an opposed postponement which the Court granted (and a costs order against my opponent for the "trick" that he tried to play).

Afterwards, I sent an email to the Advocate asking him for some feedback on my performance in this matter i.e. how I had conducted myself on the day of trial etc, how well or badly I was able to prepare for trial, and in what respects he believed I could improve on going forward. I received the following response:

"You conducted yourself perfectly today and your preparation for trial was exemplary. I could not have asked for a better instructing attorney. If this was your first solo High Court trial then it didn't show at all and it is me that should be thanking you for all your hard work. Well done.

In normal circumstances I would have been briefed (and received the brief) earlier and we could have fine-tuned court bundles and had a proper and timeous pre-trial, but none of that was your fault at all and you managed well under great pressure.

Thank you."

When I read this email, I had a smile on my face which was incapable of being subdued. It bodes well for my confidence that I was able to do something right in this fast-paced, cutting-edge field of work, even in the face of daunting obstacles.

I would like to believe that the Universe has fruitfully and convincingly answered my question.

Thank you for reading this.

xx
